Today our lives are changing
constantly. Space shuttles circle the globe, medical discoveries
occur with increasing frequency and business takes place on a twenty-four
hour basis. Increasingly the pressures of everyday living seem to
be rising, often resulting in a pace of life that is ever faster,
leaving little time for rest and relaxation, let alone reflection
on the past.
Yet, consideration of the past often recalls many artifacts from
whence we came, what has been accomplished over time, the decisions
which have been made (both right and wrong) and, often, a blueprint
for the future.
The Aurora Country Club possesses a long history (over seventy-five
years) which extends beyond that of almost any other country club
in the Chicago area. Its history tells us much about the club itself,
but also about the town of Aurora and its citizens. It also reveals
a society and era we often yearn to experience again. Perhaps that
is exactly why the Aurora Country Club exists. It is a futile attempt
to freeze time, to keep those peaceful bucolic days fixed in our
minds, separate from the frantic change which has enveloped us all.
Following is a brief summary of some of the more significant developments
in the Club's history. It is not all-inclusive and, no doubt, will
be expanded in the future by others equally interested in preserving
the record. I urge you to read it. It is a link between the past
and present. It is an opportunity to, as Henry Longhurst once said,
"Take time to smell the roses."
